It seems that the saga of whether Formula One driver Fernando Alonso will be the new Ferrari driver or not will continue for the rest of the season. Ferrari insist that he won’t be as they already have two contracted drivers. Other sources insist he will be and he’ll be named as the new Ferrari driver at the Italian Grand Prix later this year.
Now Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive officer of Renault, has waded into the debate declaring that Alonso will not be leaving them for Ferrari, their bitter rivals in the sport.
‘He will continue to drive for Renault next year, if I have anything to do with it.’
Constant media speculation surrounds Alonso and Ferrari, and suggests that he will replace one of their current drivers Massa and Raikkonen, with Raikkonen being the most likely.
Alonso hasn’t commented on the speculation himself, except to say that he is happy at Renault. This is despite being 53 points behind Jenson Button, the current championship leader.
Alonso spoke about his desire to become more competitive with Renault:
‘I think we are going to improve significantly. We will then see how the car develops and what we can achieve over the next year.’
